Umpiring: A Family Affair

The Plappert trio of Diane, Elly, and Hannah has made umpiring a family affair, an opportunity to bond, spend quality time together and make some extra cash.  The trio worked their first field hockey tournament together in Orlando, Florida over the summer and is already looking forward to the next time they take the pitch together with a whistle in hand.

Diane, mother of Elly and Hannah, coached field hockey at the youth level and commenced her umpiring career in 2004 after her daughters began playing the sport year round.  Elly started reffing girl’s lacrosse and found it was a nice way to make extra cash while doing something she enjoyed.  She joined her mother and sister on the field hockey pitch in the summer of 2012.

“My mom, sister and I are all very close.  We do a lot together and this is just one more thing that brings us together,” said Elly.

 “I love working with my girls, it’s terrific and has been a great experience for all of us.  They are quick to tell me when I make a mistake.  But, they are also quick to ask me a question – especially when it comes to managing the coaches and/or parental behavior on the sidelines.  We do a good job of balancing ‘ref talk’ with ‘girl talk,’” says Diane.

Diane loves the physical and mental challenges of umpiring and says she has met wonderful people throughout her umpiring career that share the same desire as she does to grow and develop as an umpire.  So when Diane’s daughters became old enough and needed a part-time job, she encouraged umpiring.

“I absolutely encouraged my daughters to start umpiring.  Players make great umpires.  They get right into the flow of the game and see the foul and the consequence and they know whether or not to blow their whistle to facilitate fair play.  My girls needed to work and they started out reffing girls’ lacrosse.  The money is good and there are many spring and summer tournaments throughout the Mid-Atlantic area.  When USA Field Hockey encouraged players and young umpires to attend the Disney Junior Field Hockey Showcase to learn and develop, we jumped at the opportunity.”

For Elly, the extra cash is nice but umpiring is a way for her to stay involved in the game even after her playing career is over.  “It’s nice to be able to continue to be involved in the game,” said Elly.  “I hope that umpiring can keep me active and involved with field hockey after I am no longer a player.  I can’t imagine my life without practices and games and it is reassuring that I can continue to umpire and stay connected to the game while my life leads me in a more career oriented direction.”

 So, what’s it like having your family as colleagues on the field and at tournaments?

 “It’s a lot of fun,” says Elly.  “Personally I think my mom is a great umpire.  She makes her calls with confidence and is serious when she needs to be, but is always looking to make the game a fun experience for everyone involved.  My sister is a very confident and professional umpire.  I think we all work well together because we are open with each other.  My mom is always looking for feedback on her game and we are all very receptive to any pointers that the others can give and we give them willingly.”

The Plappert’s are hoping to be back in action on the field together soon.

“We hope to continue working tournaments together,” said Diane.  “We love the travel and the opportunity to share new experiences.  We hope to get to Festival in November, although both girls play for their colleges and it makes for a very busy fall.  There are many opportunities for indoor hockey in December and January when the girls will be home for semester break, so we plan on working the Indoor Qualifiers.  We will definitely come back to Disney in the summer!”

Maureen (Sullivan) Mauk '01 is also stepping down as Co-Chair of the Communication Committee as she just gave birth to her first born last week! Congratulations Maureen on your beautiful baby boy Finnegan Moose Mauk, we are very excited to add another family member to CFHA. On behalf of the CFHA we would also like to thank you for all of your contributions to the Board and CFHA.

Co-Chair of the Communications Committee - As co-lead on the Communications Committee, you will write content, organize and publish the monthly newsletters and CFHA information. You will ensure that the mission of CFHA is communicated to our network of supporters. You will also manage the CUFH website.

Greetings CFHA Family!

So recently I moved away from Arlington, VA and all of the CFHA family in the Washington D.C. area to start grad school at Duke University in North Carolina. It has been a crazy transition and I have deeply missed all of the DC CFHA ladies. In order to really embrace my new life I decided to start playing field hockey on the club team. I figured it would be a great way to get some exercise and meet some new people. I was a little nervous going to the first practice thinking that 1) I wouldn’t be very good anymore 2) I would be crazy sore the next day 3) my new teammates wouldn’t be anywhere near as fantastic as my Cornell teammates and 4) I really prefer wearing Cornell RED uniforms and I’m not going to like wearing a Duke uniform at all. I get to the field and the first thing said to me was “are you a freshman?” I just laugh, but really I’m thinking, “Wow, I’m 26 years old and I look like I’m 18….I’ve really regressed in my life….maybe this club field hockey thing was a bad idea.” Then everyone else gets there and we talk for a little bit about team logistics and then we go around and introduce ourselves and a girl a few spots down from me introduces herself as “Tierney.” My jaw drops and I immediately stare at her and think, “What??? This is NOT the Tierney I know….she is not the prettiest goalie in the NCAA…..she’s not even a goalie and she doesn’t have curly tendrils.” Wrapping my head around having the other “Tierney” on my club field hockey team was pretty daunting, but in the spirit of embracing this new experience I decided to give her a chance….maybe she would be an okay teammate.  Fast forward a few weeks after having about 10 practices and it turns out the other “Tierney” is an okay teammate….and she has a cute dog that the real Tierney would love.  Overall, I have come to the conclusion that the other people on the team great, but absolutely nothing can replace members of the CFHA family. So my advice to the current team is to cherish your teammates now while they are close, because they are truly unique and irreplaceable. There is only one prettiest goalie in the NCAA….the real Tierney.

We have our first game this Sunday against Coastal Carolina….wish me luck!!!

Cornell Players Recap Coaching at CUFH Summer Camp.

Coaching at camp this year was a great opportunity.  The transition from player to coach was probably the weirdest part.  We were so used to playing throughout the summer that it felt strange to be the ones in charge.  We were no longer the ones playing, but were instead giving other kids the chance to play and have fun.  At first the thought of keeping track of a group of girls seemed daunting, but after a while coaching them came naturally.  Our first day was a little chaotic— it started with a coaches meeting where we were introduced to our new assistant coach, Gavin Featherstone, who we were all anxious to meet.  We immediately jumped into the full swing of check-in where girls swarmed into RPCC ready to start camp.  Among them were our incoming freshmen, who we quickly swarmed and bombarded with greetings.  After everybody got settled into the dorms, we were finally ready to go.  Groups were assigned to coaches and we were off to the field. 

The whole camp flew by, but there were a few moments that stood out.  One drill that we did involved practicing penalty strokes.  Gavin gave the girls an incentive by making a target in the top left corner of the goal, daring the girls to make the shot with a dollar as a reward.  Unfortunately for him, two campers were up for the challenge, leaving him two dollars poorer.  Later in the week, the forecast predicted thunder storms and rain— lots of rain.  It was unlikely that we would be going outside, so there were two options: play in the Ramin Room or watch a movie.  Naturally, many of the younger girls opted for the movie and a chance to get off their feet.  It was their lucky day... or so they thought.  It turned out that there was no rain and we would proceed with the normal schedule.  Finally, camp ended with the traditional skit competition.  One that left the whole camp laughing was Hibler's group performing the American national anthem in honor of our new assistant coach.  Some of the other skits included renditions of Carly Rae Jepsen's “Call Me Maybe”, Justin Bieber's “Boyfriend”, and a creative skit by the goalies inspired by Twitter called #goalieproblems.

All in all, we had a great time.  It was nice to see and work with our fellow teammates Alaina Skalski, Christine Hibler, Jaime Trout, Kat DiPastina, and our graduated senior Olivia Boyd, who we will miss in this upcoming season.  Also, we had the opportunity to meet and work with a senior on Ohio University's field hockey team, Laura Mastro, who blended so well with us that she felt like part of our team.  We're all excited for this fall season, and we can't wait until camp next summer!

GO USA Field Hockey!!!

The Olympics have been dominating my life for the past week and so far I have managed to watch beach volleyball, fencing, judo, gymnastics, handball, cycling, tennis, water polo, equestrian, shooting, archery, swimming, diving, indoor volleyball, soccer, rowing, wrestling, weightlifting, table tennis, and some of the running preliminaries, but by far my favorite has been watching USA FIELD HOCKEY!

To set the stage I think it’s worth mentioning that field hockey venue is located right next to the swimming venue making it in the middle of all the action. The other unique thing about the field hockey venue is that they are playing on a blue turf field with PINK sidelines. It looks awesome!! The Olympic organizers decided that the blue turf makes it easier for the viewers to see the ball and watching at home I didn’t have any problems seeing the ball.

The way the Olympic field hockey tournament works is that the teams are split into 2 groups of 6 with the top 2 from each group advancing to compete for the medals. Team USA is joined by Argentina, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa in Group B. Team USA started off the tournament against a strong German team. We looked a little jittery in the first half and gave up a couple of goals. The first goal was on a penalty corner with the German player unleashing a crazy drag flick from the top of the circle. The second goal for German came on a numbers up situation and was a beautiful reverse chip shot into the upper right corner of the goal. Team USA really picked up the pace coming out of halftime. They looked much more calm and were doing a great job keeping possession and being patient on defense. Their hard work was rewarded with a goal on a penalty corner making it a one-goal game. Team USA really put pressure on the German team until the end of the game including pulling the goalie and putting in a kicking back to generate more attack. Unfortunately we came up short losing to Germany 2-1, but I think they were really able to work out the kinks in preparation for the Argentina game.

The USA vs. Argentina game is a rematch of the 2011 Pan American field hockey championship game where the USA upset the number one ranked Argentine team to earn an Olympic berth. Since then, the Argentina team has dropped in rankings to number 2 in the world and I’m sure they were out for revenge. The USA team really picked off where they left off in the Germany game and looked confident. They were generating great attack and working hard to keep Argentina’s attack under control. Finally towards the end of the first half, Team USA got a goal on a beautiful diving tip on a cross into the circle. Even though we had the lead, Team USA never settled and kept attacking for the rest of the game. The defense also really buckled down and Team USA walked away another upset victory against Argentina.

Watching these awesome field hockey games has really made me want to pick up my stick and play! Team USA is off to a strong start and I can’t wait to watch them in their remaining games!!!

CFHA Hosts Successful Spring Event at Cornell April 27-29, 2012

While our quarterly newsletter will provide a full account of the activities and fun that occurred, we thought it would be a treat to give those of you who were unable to make it a quick update on how it all turned out!

Even though the weather was not supposed to cooperate, Ithaca delivered a gorgeous weekend free of the rain promised, making it pretty hard for the alums that attended to want to head home on Sunday.  Just in case the weather decided to change, the team building event hosted by the two graduating seniors, Alex Botte and Olivia Boyd, was held in the Ramin Room on the morning of Saturday, April 28, 2012.  The team building activities consisted of a mix of field hockey skills and physical fitness that small teams competed in to gain the most points.  After dominating the field hockey skills portion, the teams, consisting of a mix of alums and current players, participated in a game of trivia surrounding Cornell Field Hockey's history.  Even though only one team won, everyone gained a few new friends from this portion of the weekend!

With the team building under everyone's belt and new rivalries forming, the group got geared up and headed out to Marsha Dodson Field to compete in the alumnae field hockey game.  The first half was the current team versus the alums.  The second half consisted of the current team mixing with the alums and their families.  There was plenty of action and a couple of goals during both halves!  The next event was not held until around dinner time, so both the team and alums were able to take advantage of being on campus and catching up with old friends for the rest of the afternoon.  

At 6:30pm, the team and the alums met in the Kaplan Room to commence the mentoring dinner.  After a bit of mingling, Kimmy Gardner '04, CFHA Mentoring Chair, discussed CFHA's vision of the mentoring program and got the group talking about what the career-related events are that players in certain classes should be aware and what were ways that CFHA's mentoring program could be helpful.  These hardy discussions made everyone hungry, and the group spent the rest of the dinner chatting and getting to know each other.  Towards the end of the night, CFHA presented the two graduating seniors with a gift to officially welcome them to the Cornell Field Hockey Association.  Thank you to CFHA's own Carissa Mirasol Nee '04 for designing these banners that were presented to the seniors! Early on Sunday, April 29th, the alums gathered with the team for the final time, enjoyed a delicious brunch and heard an update about the state of Cornell from Cari Hills '98 before heading home.  A huge thank you to all of the alums that were able to spend the weekend in Ithaca.  It was so great to see so many of you, and the current team was so appreciative of your presence at the weekend and your support throughout the year!  A special thank you to Katie Bradshaw '08, CFHA Special Events Chair, for all her hard work in putting the weekend together.  We cannot wait to share more details, pictures, videos and a few other anecdotes from the weekend in the next newsletter!  Until then....

Congrats Cornell Field Hockey! Phon-a-thon Success!!

Congrats to the Cornell Field Hockey players and coaching staff for a HIGHLY successful phon-a-thon last night!! The team and coaches started calling alumni, family and friends of the program at 7PM EST in hopes of raising money to help the team travel, eat together, buy new sticks, cleats, and uniforms and maintain a highly competitive Ivy League program. The team did even better than expected and surpassed their fundraising goal!!!! A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO MADE A DONATION!!! 

The letter below comes from Head Coach, Donna Hornibrook:

"Dear Cornell Field Hockey Alumni and friends,

I am writing to update you and thank you for helping make last night's Annual Phon-a-thon a huge success on many levels.  The coaches and team are blown away by your support! There were a lot of smiling faces in the room last night and your support is a major source of encouragement to us all! We are not finished yet as any additional funds raised will stay with the program and not only help us run a first class program by helping cover our annual operating expenses such as travel and recruiting but also allow us to use excess funds raised to "enhance" the program. This permits us to do some things which we would otherwise not be able to do. As a coach I cannot fully express how great that feels to have our program in that situation.

The Phon-a-thon is one of the most important ways that the Cornell Field Hockey team builds their budget for the year; this budget helps buy equipment, pay for travel and meal expenses, and maintains a competitive program. 

 

As an alumna, if you think back to all the games you played, the bus trips north and south, the flights to California, the wet weather gear that kept you warm, the new stick or cleats you were given, the pre-game meals at RPU, Statler, and Lucatelli's...These were all made possible through donations to the program. 

 

And if you are a parent or a friend of the program, you were likely there at these games, watching us in our wet weather gear and RED uniforms, cheering us on...Your support over the years have helped make Cornell Field Hockey a wonderful place to be a female NCAA athlete.

 

By donating this year, you not only will be continuing a tradition of competitive field hockey and women's athletics, but most importantly, you will be ensuring that the current Cornell players and their families have the same memorable experiences that you have had as a member of the Cornell Field Hockey family. 

 

The players will be calling between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM EST on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012. Please chat with the current players, wish them well in their preparation for next season, and consider donating to Cornell Field Hockey!

A brand new website!

Welcome to The CFHA website!

The website is a great place to catch up on monthly CFHA and Cornell Field Hockey news, find event information, see photos, find contact information and read about the CFHA mission. The website is maintained and managed by the board members, but we encourage all of you to contribute information.
